The Coast of Legends

Land of imagination and inspiration

The Coast of Legends, an open-air storybook

A name that invites dreams, imagination and mystery: Brittany's Côte des Légendes is all of these things! Here, legends are everywhere: at every bend in the granite coastline, near every menhir, every fountain, every wash-house, every remarkable tree. Whether or not they're linked to religion, whether they revolve around fantastic animals or imaginary characters, stories are invented everywhere... and the magic happens.

Ancient stories or modern-day legends: everyone is free to make them their own, to reinvent them, to write them in their own way. Take time to contemplate, to be inspired, and sometimes surprised, by the soul of each place you discover. From the Meneham site to the Pontusval lighthouse, from the rocks of the coast to the megaliths, imagine without restraint and dream without limits.

Here, your imagination is awakened

Imagination on the Côte des Légendes is also about transmission. La Fabrique de l'Imaginaire is a cultural project created by local artists and residents. Its mission: to invite everyone to stir their imaginations, by making and telling stories that take us far afield, between fantasy and poetry. On the menu: performances in unusual places (les P'tites Fabriques), works of art linked to legends, installed on hiking trails (les Ribin' de l'Imaginaire), and a major occasional performance and festive event (la Grand'Fabrique).

Rendezvous in imaginary lands

La Grand'Fabrique de l'Imaginaire is a 3-day festival on the Côte des Légendes, featuring encounters, artistic installations and strolls, inviting you to journey into the world of the imaginary.

These are the visual side of the Fabrique. Each year, 2 new artistic installations reinterpreting local legends are unveiled at unexpected sites on the Côte des Légendes. Each invites you to give free rein to your interpretation and imagination. Come and discover, for example, the Œuf de Dragon in Plounéour-Brignogan-Plages, the Œil de Guénolé in Saint-Frégant or the Razzle-dazzle on Île aux Vaches!

Imagine the legends of tomorrow

There's a reason why artists come to the Côte des Légendes for inspiration! Groupe Ouest is the only place in Europe to welcome and support film writers. A veritable script incubator, it welcomes future scriptwriters in residence for several months, immersing them fully in the region. The Côte des Légendes has inspired numerous scenes, dialogues and characters in feature films, some of which have won multiple awards.

Cinambule is an open-air, travelling exhibition in Plounéour-Brignogan-Plages. It features characters and extracts from screenplays that have found their source and inspiration here. A must-see!

New stories to invent

The incredible thing about the Côte des Légendes is that you can create your own stories. The granite chaos of Brignogan invites you to let your imagination run wild as you make out fantastic animals, chimeras and perhaps legendary scenes. This geological curiosity, born of an upwelling of magmatic rock 400 million years ago, has been forged by time, wind and sea. The rocks take on singular silhouettes, which are interpreted differently depending on the height of the sea or the color of the sky.

Did you know

Recognizing familiar shapes in a cloud, an ink blot or, as on the Côte des Légendes, in rocks, is called pareidolia.

Nature as the main character!

What forges the character of the Côte des Légendes is also the strength of its natural elements. It's the sky, which can turn from dark gray to blue in a matter of hours. It's the color of the sea, whether deep blue or Caribbean turquoise. It's the coastal landscapes, alive and changing with the rhythm of each tide. It's the Keremma dunes, the ponds and marshes of Curnic and Langazel. These are the globe-trotting birds you can catch a glimpse of, if you take the time. Here, nature is the heroine of every story!

Journey into the imaginary, or how to break away from everyday life

Coming to Côte des Légendes means learning to dream again, rediscovering your childlike soul and accepting to disconnect from everyday life to reconnect with yourself. Because our hectic lives sometimes lead us to forget our senses, it's all about reenchanting the senses and becoming one with nature in the truest sense of the word: rediscovering the pleasure of swimming in the seathe pleasure of swimming in the sea stand-up paddle or defying gravity on the 4000 climbing blocks on the coast!

Pagan country, cradle of history

A country within a country! On the Côte des Légendes, the coastal fringe is known as Pays Pagan. For a long time, the paganiz (Breton for "peasants") suffered from an unfounded reputation as shipwreckers. They were said to disorientate ships at night by waving lights over the Île aux Vaches, in order to sink them and plunder their castaways. Another myth, as only the Côte des Légendes knows how to forge!
